Joel Douglas, P.E., Patent Agent
Joel Douglas is highly qualified when it comes to the technical aspect of work in fields spanning from medical, to mechanical, electrical and software. He is personally responsible for multiple inventions and has studied the business world inside and out, while also attaining a Master’s degree in Computer Science along the way. Douglas is also a registered US Patent Agent, and holds Professional Engineering licenses in several states. He is the named inventor on 98 U.S. patents and numerous foreign patents.
Douglas is particularly skilled at helping smaller companies wrangle their digital and technological assets, and has successfully turned multiple businesses around. He also understands the intricate requirements of working with the FDA, and has personally overseen the authoring and clearance of several class I/II devices.
Douglas started his career in General Dynamics and United Nuclear, where he held various positions over a period of more than a decade. He then moved on to become the Manager of Automation at Komag, and later on the Senior Program Manager at LifeScan. His next position was at Amira Medical, which he co-founded in 1995 and served as a Chief Technology Officer for. He founded the company with the intention of developing and commercializing the first alternate site blood glucose monitoring system, AtLast. The company was successfully acquired by Roche Diagnostics in 2001.
In 1999, Douglas co-founded another company, Sterling Medivations, where he again served as the Chief Technology Officer until 2001. The company received approval for 24 FDA 510(k)s during a period of a year and a half. At the same time, the company has filed 8 patents in the US, and 5 foreign ones.
From 2001 to 2004, Douglas served as the Chief Technology Officer at SimpleChoice, where he was mainly responsible for pushing the regulatory approval and R&D of the organization. He was behind an additional 4 successful FDA 510(k) clearances, and developed the company’s strategy for 9 SimpleChoice products including the SimpleChoice easy sub dermal infusion technology. Douglas also personally oversaw the launching of the company’s manufacturing in the US and Mexico for two separate products.
For the next 8 years, Douglas served as the CTO for his next company, Mystic Technology Partners. He founded the organization with the idea of driving new product development through careful, selective partnering, intended to extend the company’s capabilities while leveraging those of other organizations. Various new products were pushed to the market at that time, including products in the field of security marking, RFID, energy and fuel cells, and more. The company additionally developed specialized fuel and battery cells for the US Navy in a successful cooperation project . The company was sold to Simplified energy solutions.
In 2007, Douglas founded eGen, where he presided as the CTO until 2011. The company was first to the market with its low flow hydrokinetic system, which features significant improvements over competing products on the market at the time. The company established a prominent name for itself through its innovations, and was sold to an independent investor group.
At Engineered Carbon Solutions, which Douglas founded in 2014, he oversaw the creation of pellets made from a new hybrid material that combined biomass and coal. The product was an improvement in the price department and drew significant attention from multiple sides on the market. Part of that was due to its ability to easily work with the currently available pellet heating stoves and boilers that are popular on the market.
Prior to joining Stanton, he founded Loon Medical in 2013, and was responsible for the design and development of CareSentinel and CareCom, a Bluetooth BLE system and a mobile medical alert system, respectively. The company’s products featured an innovative approach to their functionality, with push notifications, automatic SMS forwarding, cloud storage, and the integration of various detection sensors.

Shem Lachhman, Partner
Shem Lachhman is an experienced leader and electrical engineering with a vast knowledge of technology and their path toward commercialization. Mr. Lachhman began his career as a field engineer for a small company specializing in automation in controls for manufacturing lines. Shortly after he achieved a M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a specialty in sensor design, microelectromechanical systems, microfabrication techniques, electronic miniaturization, and thin film lifetime testing. It was during his time at CWRU that he founded his first company MediMEMS which pursued commercialization of a thin film technology to protect implantable medical devices. He simultaneously worked with R&D teams developing a wireless implantable micro-manometer (WIMM) to sense pressure changes inside of the bladder.
Mr. Lachhman partnered with a team of engineers to develop the thin film packaging technology for the WIMM project where he developed testing instrumentation, testing procedures, sterilization techniques, and deposition techniques for polymer materials. He then founded Pelletric where he led a team of physicians, engineers, and businessman toward the commercialization of a novel technology to closely monitor blood pressure of hypertensive patients. He won 2nd place at the Reset Social Enterprise accelerator program and was also awarded a state grant to pursue the technology.
Shem then continued his journey by joining CareCube, Inc. where he served as the CTO, to engineer and develop an IoT technology with the ability to detect instances of elder abuse, and health insurance fraud. Simultaneously, he also partnered with UJAT, in the development of their UjatCare platform and several other products for home healthcare agencies such as smart phone apps, A.I. powered technologies, and marketing tools. He has worked with several young startups in several roles as an engineer, marketing director, and manufacturing consultant.
Mr. Lachhman is currently a partner at Nuventus aiding in marketing, sales, engineering, business development and product development services. He is pursuing his licensure at the USPTO to become a patent agent.
